RUMOUR: Power Rangers Reboot in the works at Disney, Toei Not Involved (+3 Things I Want From the Reboot)

Let’s address those Power Rangers Reboot rumours and, while we’re at it, take a look at some of the things we’d like to see from it.

Hey all, Sean here again, and wow, do I have news for you! I may be very late to the punch on this, but a good while ago, rumours began circulating of a possible reboot of Power Rangers being in the works, and Disney, who ran the franchise from the latter half of Wild Force all the way through RPM, are in talks to produce!

As reported by thewrap.com, Jonathan E. Steinberg, showrunner of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as Dan Shotz, are in talks to write, direct and produce this new series. But, there is a small catch to this revival and it has to do with the other half of Power Rangers, Super Sentai…

In addition to rumours about a reboot, as reported by deadline.com, this new Power Rangers series will have zero involvement from Toei whatsoever, meaning that for the first time in the franchises history, Power Rangers will have no Super Sentai to draw from, instead relying solely on original suits, stories and monsters. Regardless, I want to list off three things I would like to see from the Power Rangers reboot, so without any more delay, let’s get to the list!

#1: Start from Scratch

Now, I know a lot of people don’t want this, but to me, the most logical place to begin a reboot is by starting with MMPR. The 2017 movie had a good thing going with it in terms of tone, aesthetics and overall concept. This new reboot should try to be like the show, but do what the 2017 movie did.

#2: Introduce Tommy from the start

Next up, is in regards to Tommy Oliver, the face of the franchise as a whole. While the 2017 movie had a post-credit scene which was intended to set up a sequel focusing on Tommy (likely adapting the “Green With Evil” saga), however, due to the movie flopping, this sequel never came to pass. I personally believe that if Tommy is introduced from day 1, we can develop his and the core five’s relationships long before he ever becomes the Green Ranger.

#3: Similar Tone and Writing to the 2017 Movie

I’ve mentioned the 2017 movie twice now, and that’s because I absolutely love this movie, as to me, it’s the gold standard of what a reboot of Power Rangers should be, but alas, this movie never really took off until it was well past its time, and I honestly think that this movie is what the new reboot should aspire to be like.

My thoughts overall on the reboot? I’m nervous to say the least, in a time where Power Rangers has fallen out of the mainstream view, this reboot could be what the franchise needs to enter the new era we live in, and it’s good timing this reboot is coming, especially with the new toyline from Playmates.

What do you think? Is there anything you want from the Power Rangers reboot? Join the conversation on social media or leave a comment below. I’m Sean, signing off for the final time.
