Ultraman Omega Trailer, Director and Design Revealed!

It’s that time of year again! Join Sean for all of the news about the upcoming Ultra Series: Ultraman Omega!

Hey all, Sean here again and, as you may previously recall, I previously discussed the teaser for this year’s Ultraman show. Now, after some time without any news, I finally get to cover the reveal of Ultraman Omega! Let’s not waste any more time, let’s begin.

Synopsis

Kicking things off, we have the show’s synopsis, which comes to us directly from tsuburaya-prod.com, which reads as follows:

On an Earth where neither heroes nor kaiju exist, an alien suddenly falls from the sky. This Ultra’s symbol is the red space boomerang he holds, the Omega Slugger, and his name means “ultimate.” “Omega” is an alien who has lost his memories. Taking human form and adopting the name “Sorato”, he becomes interested in the life forms called “Earthlings” that he is encountering for the first time and attempts to understand them.

When a giant life form appears, amnesiac Sorato recalls a word—“kaiju”. As these kaiju continue to appear before him, a sense of duty awakens in Sorato’s subconscious. He transforms into “Ultraman Omega” and an intense, fast-paced fight unfolds. The Earthlings, in turn, are grappling with encountering these gigantic life forms and the alien that fights with a red slugger for the first time, watching from various places and trying to understand what they are. Before long, Sorato and an ordinary young man—an alien and an Earthling, become friends. This ambitious work poses a question through these friends’ resonating hearts; “Why does Ultraman protect the Earth?” Now, is when they awaken.

It’s been a while since an Ultra has taken a human form rather than adopting a human host, and I quite like this approach, as we’ll be able to see our world from an outsider’s POV, as he tries to make sense of it all, while combatting the Kaiju that threaten this peaceful planet.

Ultraman Omega/Sorato Okida

Next up, we have our titular hero, Ultraman Omega! At a height of 50 metres and weighing 50,000 tons, he is armed with the red boomerang weapon “The Omega Slugger”, which also acts as his transformation device when in human form. An amnesiac alien who fell to Earth in a world where Kaiju and Ultras don’t exist. His finisher is the “Reticulute Beam, which is fired when his arms are in a “+” formation.

Like with Arc, I absolutely love Omega’s design, which once again does go to show there is beauty in simplicity, and I’m reminded of Z’s Beta Smash form with the red pattern on Omega’s face, which for me, adds so much by doing so little.

Next up, we have the Omega Slugger, the transformation device and sidearm of Ultraman Omega, as well as his main gimmick item, the Omega Meteo. When the Omega Meteo is placed in the Slugger, and Sorato pulls the trigger, part of the blade splits open, which results in transforming Sorato into his true form, Ultraman Omega!

I’m a sucker for transformation devices that double as weapons, and the Omega Slugger might be my new favourite, simply because of how sleek it looks.

Next up, we have Omega’s human form, Sorato Okida, played by Shori Kondo. This is the form Omega takes upon arriving on Earth, so that he can blend in with and better understand humans.

Director

Taking up the role of lead director this years is Masayoshi Takesue, who previously served as lead director for Ultraman R/B and Ultraman Decker. Takusue has been involved with the franchise since the early 200’s, starting with Ultraman Cosmos, where he acted as second assistand director.

English Dub

Khoi Dao, a voice actor best known for his work in various videos games and anime, as well as the occasional live action dub, having dubbed over Yuki Yamada’s role, Shirō Mizushima, for the english dub of Godzilla Minus One on Netflix, will be providing the voice of Sorato in Ultraman Omega’s English dub.

Ultraman Omega is set to premiere on Saturday, July 5th at 9:00am JST. The rest of the cast, theme song and theme song artists have yet to be announced.
