FIRST LOOK: Playmates’ Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Re-Ignition Figures!

From announcement to now, it’s taken a long time to get any news about Playmates foray into the Power Rangers toyline. But now, we have more news than we can shake a Blade Blaster at! Let’s go!

Hey all, Sean here again, and boy, do I have news for you! As we are all well aware, Hasbro recently gave Playmates the toy license for Power Rangers, and following that, Playmates announced a toyline based on Mighty Morphin’, called “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Re-Ignition”, and now, after taking their sweet time after the silhouette reveals, we finally have our first proper look at 6 of the figures in this toyline, and who better to be revealed first than the rangers themselves? Well, thanks to Twitter/X users @PwrRngr, with a later, more official look being showcased by @Martian_Ranger we can finally get our first clear look at the toyline.

And here we are, our first look at the new figures, which are similar to what Hasbro did before: modern updates of the iconic Auto-Morphin figures, and, well, I’m kind of underwhelmed. My first thought upon seeing this was “this is it? THESE are the new Power Rangers figures? And here I was thinking it’d be a line of entry level collector figures”, made worse by the fact that once again, the manufacturer is limiting itself to just MMPR, when the other seasons are in demand.

Then, we move on to the Dino Megazord and, oh boy, oh boy, what went wrong here? The tail guns on the Triceratops and Saber Tooth Tiger are missing, with the Megazord legs now having two giant gaps up front, by the look of things, the shoulders, which are supposed to come up, are stationary, and the absence of the Power Sword, which they will likely include, but not having it in the promotional image gives me my doubts.

One of the few positives I have for this line is that the figures are going to be sold at $9.99—an affordable price for any budget. Another is the weapons being painted, much like the mainline Hasbro figures during Beast Morphers, as well as the Lightning Collection and Hasbro’s Auto Morphin’ figures, however, that positive gets nullified a bit with Playmates making the decision to sell the five Dinozords separately, and at a price of $17.99, and the Zords look like that? I’m sorry, but that would be the price I pay for the whole set!

We also have details on the Power Morpher and Blade Blaster:

Every Power Ranger needs their Power Morpher to summon the spirits of their Dinozord and become the alien fighting heroes that are the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! This Power Morpher comes with all five of the Power Ranger Power Coins and has over 40 sounds and phrases! The Power Morpher recognizes each coin and unlocks each of those Dinozord custom phrases and sounds! $16.99

When it’s time to take on Rita and her Evil Aliens, you need the Power Ranger Blade Blaster! Two weapons in one, the Blade Blaster starts as the Power Ranger Blaster and then morphs into the extended Sword that can be used in any battle. The Blade Blaster comes with over 20 sounds and phrases and includes lights with every blast! Power Rangers, Blade Blasters up! $19.99

In addition to these, the Power Rangers official Instagram account revealed the standard figures of the Rangers. While these do look slightly better than the Auto Morphin figures, I do have some concerns, namely with Tommy’s neck being painted gold rather than the white of the spandex, and the Dragon Dagger being primarily gold and green rather than black and green. Pictures from Toy Fair have also started coming out, revealing not just the Ranger figures, but the monsters, roleplay items, and more! What we hadn’t got confirmation of was the Dragon Dagger (with Green Ranger Power Coin), the Battle Bikes, reissues of the original Mighty Morphin’ figures and various plushes, with demonstrations of the toys coming from YouTuber Pixel Dan (see video below).

Part of me is cautiously optimistic, but I’m also rather nervous at the same time, as I was personally hoping for something that could stand toe-to-toe with other collector lines such as Marvel Legends, DC Multiverse, S.H. Figuarts and more in the stead of the Lightning Collection. After seeing these, I don’t know what to think…

What do you, our readers, think? Do you think these figures will be good and that this new toyline will do well? Let us know your thoughts, and until then, this is Sean, writer, reviewer and Morphin’ Master for The Toku Source, signing off.
