Power Rangers SPD: Preview of Promised Future Granted by Fan Visual Effects

Power Rangers SPD’s promised future has been recreated by talented fan artist, showcasing known event as fans would love to see. Hasbro’s plan to reboot the franchise destroyed hopes of a momentous anniversary release, but one artist grants us a slice of what we hoped.

Power Rangers SPD will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2025, which is also when the story took place. Fans may never see the live action return of the team due to recent developments. However, a talented VFX artist has managed to reinvent the SPD morph while also adding characters that fans have desired from the BOOM! Studios comics. This includes the team as it would stand today based and the new Rangers fans never got to see.

Power Rangers SPD aired in 2005 as the 13th season of Power Rangers, featuring a total of eight Rangers during its lifespan. Unlike many series, the Rangers changed colours due to a complex ranking system. This meant the Blue and Green Rangers switch to the next colour rank as members left or took on other responsibilities. The series and characters also featured in canon TTRPG, Power Rangers Hyperforce, and the Saban’s Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon comic, which showed how the team changed over time.

See The Future Of SPD With Updated Morph Remake

Fans finally got to see a significant moment in Power Rangers history as the future of SPD is revealed. HurricaneGold (a.k.a. Daniel) has provided the first sample of what SPD would look like in the modern day. This includes the entire team as featured in the Soul of the Dragon graphic novel, which saw Tommy Oliver pass his powers to his son, JJ Oliver. The videos not only see Patrick Skye take on the role of JJ, but also how his Morph might look as the Green SPD Ranger also gets the Dragon Shield from his father.

However, this is not all as Daniel also recreates the entire team as they would be seen today. This includes Matt Austin’s Bridge as the Red Ranger and Hyperforce’s Malika Lim Eubank as the new Blue Ranger, Lina Song. Song also featured in the Power Rangers Hyperforce series and debut as the Green Ranger, which completed the team while Jack left the team as Sky become Red.

What makes this fan recreation even more potent is that Daniel also recreated one of the biggest concepts that never made it in the comics. This includes Jason Bischoff’s Fire Squad that will see Sky’s Dekaranger and Red Ranger Bridge, with the return of Jack Landors as he becomes inversed-Red-Ranger, Ranger Prime. Ever seen revealed, this has been one story that fans wanted to see, especially for Brandon Jay McLaren since his character didn’t go the route that would allow him to come back.

During an interview, Daniel revealed that the project started as fun during Power Morphicon 2024, featuring a collaboration with Patrick Skye and Gem from Prawnhorn Heroes. Patrick debuted his SPD Green Dragon Ranger and the group decided to film and create the morph sequence. It was also revealed that the initial morph sequence for the JJ cosplay took about a month, working mainly during weekends.

“Once I finished, I got so excited that I started making the other morphs too. And once I started thinking about all the Rangers I could include, I just kept going, ultimately creating 18 morph sequences! Those took about two weeks to complete, working late nights after my day job, which led to some very short nights with only about 4 hours of sleep”

The artist also revealed the tricky nature of creating so many morphs for different characters, with the most challenging including making the sequence reusable. Planning ahead was revealed to be the key, along with making sure not to miss any detail since the preview took between 15 to 30 minutes to see. He also talked about the fun part of the project, which was tied to the 30th anniversary season.

“The most fun part was watching it all come together. I didn’t just want to recreate the SPD Morph, I wanted to modernize it, taking inspiration from Cosmic Fury. The chromatic aberration effect, the particle simulations, the Rangers looking at the camera as their helmets form, the belt shot, and the split-screen graphic were all elements I borrowed from Cosmic Fury because, in the lore, SPD follows after it.”

Daniel also talked about the desire to see the concept brought to life if Hasbro created it for 2025. This included his fondness of SPD for its untapped potential compared to other seasons, along with the unanswered questions that still linger. He also talk about the response to the SPD sequel morph he made and shared his joy about the reaction he gained.

“Why did Syd and Z stay with their original colors? What happened after the fall of the Troobian Empire? The future depicted in Soul of the Dragon is pretty bleak, how did that come to be? All these unanswered questions would make for an incredible sequel series. I’d love to see it as an animated series, which would allow us to dive into the story right after SPD without worrying about the actors aging 20 years.”

“I’ve been thrilled to see how many people are still passionate about SPD. Getting reactions from Malika Lim, Jason Bischoff, and Leanne Hannah, was amazing. It’s especially rewarding when creators who worked on the lore and designs show their support. Leanne (Designer of Deka Ranger & Ranger Prime suits) gave me valuable feedback on the Deka Ranger morph, specifically about the fiery nature of the suit and character. Something I hadn’t initially considered but was so glad to incorporate.”

It’s such a shame that fans will never be able to see any more amazing content from SPD, especially with such a potent concept that will bring in the entire cast together once more. Simon Bennett also stated previously he had a potential plan for JJ Oliver to follow Once & Always’ Minh, but unfortunately this never went ahead. It’s thanks to talents such as HurricaneGold that we get to see a little insight into what could have been, but it’s clear the fan’s hunger for a bigger legacy of sequels will remain.
