The Ride Review with Ethan: Kamen Rider Gavv Episode 10

Snacks up, Riders! After recovering for tokusatsu’s natural enemy, pre-emption, Gavv returns! This week, it’s serving us up a pair sleuthing, a ‘sweet’ teamup and a ‘crabby’ baker. Let’s jump into this!

Recap

The plot of this episode is really straight forward. It opens with Shoma and Sachika learning about rumours of something big moving around at night while out on a job, while Shoma being treated to some doughnuts which, of course, makes a new Gochizo!

While eating the doughnuts and hiding the resulting Gochizo from Sachika, Hanto bursts in asking them to look into the mysterious cake salesman from last episode, having realised the girl he was meant to meet up with wasn’t coming as he had gotten her. While Sachika works away on the computer finding info, the boys take off to search the area and find the shop’s location on foot.

Eventually their search leads them to a shocking realisation. This Granute is going after little kids, exclusively. Eventually, tracking him down to a pre school, the duo make up an excuse to split up so they can transform and not reveal their secret identities to each other. The three begin to fight, with the Granute revealing he has the power to turn into a giant hermit crab, with this missing buildings being his shell.

Gavv turns into his Vrocan Form and blasts the Granute to pieces. Valen, meanwhile, makes a choco slip ‘n’ slide and skids around gathering up the pressed victims.

After freeing all the kids, Valen half comes clean about stealing the white choco Gochizo’s and asks Gavv for some, as he doesn’t want to rely on Suga. Shoma, believing Hanto’s a Granute that can’t make minions like him, assigns his white chocolate Gochizos to Valen. They take off, with Hanto going to see the new dance moves his friend wanted to show him and Shoma reporting back to Sachika. The episode ends with Suga getting a package from someone with what appears to be a Granute USB (the ones they take out of there Gavvs when they transform into their monster form ) and making a bunch of ominous remarks.

The Bad

“Ooooh snap, the bad sections back!”

Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s a small thing but… this was the first episode were Shoma failed to ask the monster of the week to drop the Dark Treats or be crushed (not counting the Agents, that is). I get it, he was targeting little kids so they should have exploded him, regardless but I hope this isn’t a sign of them dropping that aspect of Shoma’s character – that part that offers these human targeting monster addicts a the chance for redemption. It was always a really nice show of how compassionate Shoma can be and also – because we all know eventually Valen and Gavv are likely to eventually have there legally mandated main vs. secondary fight over whether a Granute can be redeemed – it would be infinitely more interesting then it being because Hanto realises that Shoma is a Granute and Hanto wants just to blindly to genocide the Granutes.

Yo, Granute, count up your sins, or whatever…

The Good

Like everything else, the chemistry between Hanto and Shoma investigating was great; I love that we are still doing the Donbrothers-esque secret identity between heroes for comedy stuff. The team up fight with the giant crab fight was great, with Valen pulling a clever use of his powers to make a slick for himself to slide around on. All the way, Shoma and Hanto were both really worried about each other’s civilian identities making it outta the pre school, that was just really nice to see.

The Conclusion

Gavv continues to be fantastic and I can not wait to see where all of this is going. The preview shows Lango himself arriving to deal with Shoma. I gotta imagine we are heading straight into a major few episodes to end out the pre Christmas season with. Fun stuff!

What do you think? Did you enjoy the episode? Whatcha think of the two parter overall ? As always, I’ve been Ethan: Writer, reviewer and person thanking Toei for the day late birthday gift that I’m counting this episode as for The Toku Source. See you next time!
