Godzilla vs. Digimon Collaboration Announced at Godzilla Fest

The historic collaboration that you never knew you needed! In celebration of his 70th anniversary, the King of the Monsters takes on their toughest opponent yet

This past week at Godzilla Fest 2024, they announced the latest in Godzilla’s long line of collaborations. This announcement was then uploaded to Bandai’s YouTube channel for those of us not fortunate enough to be in attendance at the event.

But what exactly is it they will be doing? While the teaser may not give us a lot of details to work on there are some things we know from it for sure: They will be releasing two Godzilla themed Digimon Colour V-Pets, and there will be at least one fusion Digimon, both coming soon.

If you’re sat there thinking, “Ethan, you’re writing for a tokusatsu site… You can’t just expect us to know what a Digimon colour is,” you would be within your rights in asking that. This brings us to our next section…

What is a Digimon Colour?

Originally, Digimon wasn’t invented as a rival to Pokemon. It was invented to be “Tamagotchi for boys.” As such, long before the anime came along, Digimon existed in the form of various V-Pets. The Digimon Colour is a modern rerelease of those original V-Pets, updated with full colour, changeable backgrounds and rechargeable batteries.

Who will be on these V-Pets ? (Speculation Time!)

Unlike the only other recently announced Digimon Colour collaboration with Monster Hunter (wild time to be a Digimon fan), they didn’t reveal the Digimon Colours, only showing one collaboration monster, and using “vs.” branding, not an “X”

One conclusion that can be taken from this is that the V-Pets won’t be a mix between Digimon and Godzilla but will, instead, be one V-Pet featuring Godzilla and friends and another with a Digimon lineup, inspired by Godzilla, with the ability to nurture the right little lad on each of them and combine them together. While it’s possible I’m wrong about that and both of them are a healthy mix of the two franchises but, either way, we can still speculate who would make it in and if we are going to get more collaboration monsters.

Making the Cut

Let’s start by working out how many from each franchise could show up. The original Digimon Colours only had, at most, nineteen Digimon on them; including the two “just hatched from an egg” stage Digimon. We are, therefore, looking at at least nine or so picks from both franchises. Additionally, these V-Pets had two Jogress Digimon (the official franchise term for fused Digimon), so that’s about seven fresh outta the egg representative picks and at least two combination monsters.

With no official name yet fans have have been coming with there own, Atomicgreymon being my personal favourite.

I feel like some safe bets from the Godzilla camp are: Godzilla (obviously), Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla, with a slot probably being taken up by Burning Godzilla. The last slot is likely to be something like Showa Godzilla, who would evolve into these other picks.

For team Digimon, it’s a lot harder, as they have a lot of possible picks that could with that would fit well. If I had to put money on it, I would say that, firstly, Agumon and Wargreymon are locks – especially being that Agumon is the primary pick for franchise mascot and Wargreymon is clearly half of the combination monster we have seen. For sure, I feel confident in saying Dinomon, the fairly recently new Tyrannomon mega evolution, is likely to make an appearance, given its extremely clear inspirations, as well as Machinedramon (also known as Mugendramon).

With the combination of Wargreymon and Godzilla, there is likely only one other combination creature between the two franchises and I think the choice would be obvious. Who would be the perfect opponent for Atomicgreymon? Mugenzillamon, of course! Or Rust Tyranomon, I guess, but the former is far is more likely…

While something with the Garurumon line would be awesome, or even something with King Ghidorah and Deltamon, no other combination fits quite as cleanly together as MechaGodzilla and Machinedramon. @ me, Bandai, I’m full of great ideas like this…

Godzilla vs. Digimon Colour is coming soon. Stay tuned for further updates as they’re revealed in the coming weeks.

Who do you think will be on the line up for the V-Pet? Can you come up with a cooler combination than MugenZillamon? Be sure to keep an eye out for the eventual preorders here on The Toku Source.
