Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger: Make Way for BunRed 119!

Last week, the widely anticipated Bun Red 119 was finally unveiled to the fandom, bringing in a very positive reaction from the fandom. Let’s take a closer look at this fiery new addition!

Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger launches into its third quarter with the addition of a special powerup for the team’s leader, Hando Taiya. Since Boonboomger has been focussing on tropes and themes that were most prevalent while Super Sentai was at the peak of it’s popularity, and with the recent inclusion of BunViolet, the next logical addition to the team was a powerup for BunRed.

Origins

Bundorio invents the Zunzun Shouka Blaster, a fire extinguisher shaped transformation gun, to help Taiya achieve his dream of becoming a firefighter. By sliding the pump and pulling the pin, Taiya transforms into Bun Red’s enhanced form, BunRed 119!

Sliding the pump and attaching the Boonboom Changer to the Zunzun Shouka Blaster unleashes Boonboomger Robo 119’s finisher! BunRed 119 has additional moves such as Hose Impact, which shoots high pressure water from his shoulder, and Zunzun Overdrive, which fires a powerful fire extinguishing ray from the Zunzun Shouka Blaster to extinguish flames and fight the Hashiryan.

Additionally, the team will add Boonboom Leo Rescue which, when combined with Bundorio, allows Boonboom Trailer to transform into the Super Bakuage form, Boonboomger Robo 119! In this mode, it can release water to create a giant blade and perform a special attack.

A Closer Look

BunRed 119, depicted in the images above, features a vibrant and sleek design that is an overhaul powerup for BunRed. The undersuit, unlike Taiya’s base form, is predominantly red with black accents, which creates a dynamic and striking visual effect. The use of a bright, bold red as the primary colour also gives the impression of a firefighter uniform while the black sections provide contrast and depth. The design also maintains the tyre design gimmick Boonboomger is known for, with BunRed’s tyres on the sides of the armour.

The armour itself is red and resembles a fire extinguisher, with nozzles on the shoulders and centre of the armour and a pressure gauge on the centre, too. The rear of the armour has a fire extinguisher which can also resemble an oxygen pack. The helmet heavily resembles Bun Red base form but it has also been fashioned after a firefighter helmet. The red reflective strips on the helmet contains the name ‘Boonboomger’ in bold characters to maintain the uniformity. The rear of the helmet also has a net protector that is common in modern day firefighter helmets.

The choice of material is noteworthy as it contributes significantly to the overall aesthetic. PLEX, who are in charge of costume designs in tokusatsu, opted for a vinyl material similar to what was used for the KingOhger suits. This choice was deliberate to achieve a shiny, reflective look that enhances the visual appeal on screen. Vinyl, known for its glossy finish, not only gives the suit a polished and high tech appearance but also ensures durability and for the suit actor’s movements during action scenes.

It is also worth noting that the number 119 is a nod to the number dialled during an emergency in Japan.

Complementing BunRed 119’s debut will be the third quarter of toys! Which also include the toys for the powerup! Here is what to forward to this quarter.
