Along with the new Kurumajyu, new twists are added to the latest instalment that shakes up perceptions of the story. With the new hero adding chaos to the mix, the highway has now opened to the beginning of new relationships.

Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger will now feature six heroes as part of the main cast, with Bundorio and Byun Diesel also part of the story. Yu Miyazawa made his debut as Sakito Homura in episode 16, who was revealed to be BunViolet. Teammates Reunited in Boonboomger #17

The latest instalment of the 48th Sentai has added greater details regarding the history between Bundorio and Byun Diesel. Boonboomger has featured BunViolet as a wild card that is purely interested in chaos, but the latest release issues important details about Bundorio’s past. The episode had a smooth start as the cast were in evening wear at Taiga’s bar. With the new Kurumajyu, Gym Grumer, the episode also includes the debut of the Byunbyum Mach Robo, as Byun Diesel drives into action.

Unexpected Rivalry & New Reveals

Four members were given a fantastic new look as Sakito and Byun D joined them in hope of meeting with Bundorio. Although Ishiro always has an professional look, the scene led to a elegant start to the transformation as Miu Suzuki, Ryu Saito and Satoru Soma scrubbed up, too. It was this bar scene that unveiled further details in the backstory, as Bundorio revealed he was actually on the same team as Byun Diesel. The story had perfectly deceived the audience so far into thinking both were racing against each other, instead of teammates.

There is clearly a great drama unfolding between the characters, which still hasn’t been fully realised. However, it was great to see such tension since Byun Diesel was too fast for Bundorio to keep up. The episode also added a further surprise by revealing the BBGP team was also called Boonboomger, with Bundorio winning a race once, meaning his choice of name won instead of Byunbyumger. This detail was an unexpected but delightful addition to the overall tale. The episode also served as a road towards the meshing of both groups, since Sakito shared his desire to be hired by the team.

Fuelling Conflict, Unease and Comical Combat

The birth of the new Kurumajyu was, oddly, a sequel to the unexpected efforts of Dekotorade and Itasha. Yeiyei suddenly bursts out after finding Cannonborg modding them was a great touch of dread. It also served the great purpose of allowing a new ability to skip the Highway Space route, which is usually taken by Yeiyei. It was a welcome addition to the story, since Cannonborg has always caused unease, but this was now heightened by the possible wild card threat he can play.

The encounter with the Gym Grumer featured a great combat scene but the best entertainment came in their first encounter. Seeing the team stuck with weights was a great gimmick for the monster but both Genba and Ishiro stood out the most. This included Ishiro revealing to be a gym buff and Genba overly given weights all over his body. This highlighted how overpowered Genba is portrayed to be, with some great action sequences featuring for BunViolet to follow.

New Robo Debut Overshadowed By Mecha

Although there was no Highway Space run with Yeiyei, fans were still treated to some Mach action from Byun Diesel. Byunbyum Mach made its debut on the road as it interrupted Boonboomger Robo’s entrance. The action from the mecha gave fresh new scenes for fans to experience but the treadmill surprise from the Gym Grumer created a great shift in balance. The main feature was Bundorio changing a tyre in his robo mode, which highlighted the compatibility between characters and the truth to their history.

Although the tyre change was well suited to the plot, the debut of the mecha overshadowed the brief debut of the Byunbyum Mach Robo appearance. It was great to see the transformation sequence take place, but the use felt rushed as a finisher was quickly implemented. It would have been better to include a mecha only finisher just for this episode, since it felt like it messed with the pacing of the episode.

Overall, there were some micro delights scattered throughout the episode. The extras from the gym added to the humour, while Haruhi Iuchi, Natsuki Hanae and Yu Miyazawa gave their characters potent interactions. This episode felt like a great way to establish more relations, while also teasing greater friction. The ending also featured a secret for Sakito, granting fans a impressionable teaser of his storyline with the F1 driver card.

For additions to the history and the build of relations, we give Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger Episode 17 a total score of 7 out of 10.

Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger will feature a clash between heroes in episode 18, airing Sunday June 30th, 2024. The episode will feature BunRed VS BunViolet, along with action from Byunbyum Mach Robo.
