New Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Game Announced – Rita’s Rewind, Revealed!

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are back on the gaming space! Protect Angel Grove in the new retro inspired beat ’em up by Digital Eclipse!

Who had Power Rangers on their Summer Game Fest 2024 bingo card? I certainly didn’t but what a wonderful surprise to behold!

Developed by Digital Eclipse, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is the new title coming to the likes of Steam, Xbox, Playstation and the Nintendo Switch. At the moment, it’s not known if it’s coming to both Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 or Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Speaking for myself only, I imagine it would.

Rita’s Rewind brings the original team of rangers into a new 90’s inspired adventure, complete with 90’s inspired gameplay to boot! Those who have played Tribute Games’ TMNT: Shredders Revenge will be immediately reminded of that title upon seeing the new MMPR game. Gameplay is expected to be similar to the aforementioned title or akin to titles like Streets of Rage, Final Fight or Double Dragon (for the aged millennials like myself). Visually, the game elicits memories of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers game on both the ol’ Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo. The game will allow for single player or online and offline coop gameplay for up to five players all at once!

The initial trailer released gives ranger fans plenty to chew on. Familiar locations from past episodes; bosses such as Madam Woe and the ever stubborn Goldar; enemies such as the iconic putties and persistent Tenga Warriors are spotted and… the return of Robo Rita?!

That’s right! Robo Rita from the Hasbro’s Netflix special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always returns! But how? For now, it’s complete speculation but based on the name of the game (Rita’s Rewind) it would imply she managed to travel back in time as was her plan in the third act of the aforementioned special. As she was stopped in Once and Always, is this an alternative timeline where she succeeded? Perhaps!

What seems to be confirmed for sure is that Robo Rita did indeed travel to the past; Digital Eclipse seemed to confirm as much when I approached them about the possibility of an MMPR compilation title via Twitter/X…

While Digital Eclipse are known for their compilations such as the Mega Man Legacy Collection, The Disney Afternoon Collection or even their excellent TNMT: The Cowabunga Collection, an MMPR compilation isn’t on the cards just yet.

With the game having a connection to Once and Always, I suppose fans could see the game as a quasi-sequel, though I doubt one will need to have seen the special before diving into the gameplay.

Speaking of gameplay, while the main levels will consist of solo or coop brawling in the streets, vehicles make a return in the form of quasi-3D stages that look like a mix of either Sega’s Space Harrier and Super Hang-On titles. The trailer also very briefly shows what looks to be first person POV Megazord gameplay!

Fans may have noticed a lack of Tommy in the trailer with the focus being on the core five Rangers. Does this mean Tommy is completely excluded from the title? Don’t count him out just yet! Eagle eyed fans will have noticed the very brief rollercoaster section of the trailer had a sixth cart… a green sixth cart!

Whether they’re hiding Tommy ’til a later reveal or whether he’s an unlockable character is anyone’s guess at the moment. Since the story involves time travel, I won’t too surprised if Tommy is an unlockable character after defeat as a boss character first!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is expected to release in late 2024! Morphinominal!!!
