Super Sentai is long overdue for a magically themed Sentai Series but 2025 is the perfect time for its return! Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger is currently airing as the 48th Sentai series, but an upcoming anniversary could be the perfect selection for the 49th team.
Now is the perfect time to dive back into a theme based on magic as Magiranger will soon be celebrating its 20th anniversary. With various Super Sentai series celebrating their anniversary in the spotlight, the next season before the big 50th anniversary of the franchise could finally bring a new exciting twist. Here is the full lineup of reasons why 2025 could be the Sentai year of magic.
Super Sentai has greatly enhanced many past series as various shows hit their big anniversaries. This often includes 10th anniversary, or 10 Years After, specials for Sentai such as Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger and even bigger releases for the 20th anniversary of Hurricanger and Abaranger. However, these events have become more impactful including Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger featuring a connection in the 47th Sentai, Ohsama Sentai KingOhger. Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger is also celebrating its 20th anniversary with a featured movie, with a special Tonbo Ohger crossover coming for the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club.
Bring Magic Back! 49th Sentai Could Bring Back a Long-Awaited Theme
Super Sentai is currently running the car themed 48th Sentai series, Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger but the next series could be the perfect time to bring back the magic theme. There has only been one team that has used this theme, which was Mahou Sentai Magiranger. There have been some heroes that have used magic, such as AoNinger and Zenkai Magine, but now is the perfect time for a new team to debut. Here are the top reasons why the next series should bring back magic for 2025.
MagiRanger Celebrating 20th Anniversary
One of the biggest and most obvious reasons is that the 29th Sentai series will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025. Many recent anniversaries for the Super Sentai series have been getting bigger, with many theatrical releases and even new powers to feature. However, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger’s integration in Ohsama Sentai KingOhger has proven the power of historic links. The 49th Sentai could be the perfect chance to add even more links to a past Sentai, especially since even Magiranger featured Magi Yellow as a teacher in Shuriken Sentai Ninninger.
There is More Than One Source of Magic
Although Magiranger is a team of sorcerers, there are many routes that a magic team could go. This could be anything from diving into a new form of magic like alchemy or even using more supernatural elements. As there aren’t many magic based teams, any concept would be refreshing. The concept would also perfectly allow the Kamen Rider series to be part of the mythos, including Kamen Rider Wizard and Kamen Rider Gotchard. A great example of diversity includes the alchemy theme used for the Omega Rangers in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics.
A Great Concept Leading to 50th Anniversary
During the Reiwa era of Sentai, fans have been getting an insane mixture of concepts and there is a lot of diversity. This includes the crazy story featured in Avataro Sentai Donbrothers and the complex and visually stunning world of KingOhger. However, magic has only been a minor feature during the era so far. Adding a mystical or even an Isekai-esque theme would be a great way to be an exciting release without being overshadowed by the big upcoming Sentai for 2026. There are also a lot of secondary themes that have yet to be used, such as video games or even a TTRPG.
No matter which direction, magic has the potential for a big debut waiting for 2025 and Toei could bring forth a Sentai season that could blow away fans. Mahou Sentai Magiranger will be celebrating its big 20th anniversary and even Ressha Sentai TokQger will be celebrating its 10th anniversary milestone. There are a lot of other opportunities to involve other magic themed heroes so this could be a great year to celebrate a theme after a high dominance of technology.
Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger is currently airing as the booming, machine powered 48th Sentai series. Episodes are airing every Sunday exclusively in Japan via TV-Asahi. Tokusatsu Sentai Dekaranger is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary with the upcoming movie, Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger 20th: Fireball Booster. The feature will be released in Japan on June 7, 2024, with a DVD & Blu-Ray releasing November 13th, 2024.
