‘Tokusatsu’ Officially Recognised By Oxford English Dictionary

Tokusatsu, the iconic genre that categorises Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, has been officially recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary, paving the way for a worldwide future.

A modern reflection of the reach of tokusatsu has finally been realised with its recognition from the accepted authority source of the English language. As Toei develops its global distribution plan for all IPs, this latest development has highlighted how much tokusatsu has affected the English speaking world. The word has also been added alongside other Japanese words, including Donburi and Isekai.

Tokusatsu has been steadily growing, with many iconic franchises loved around the world. This includes the American Super Sentai counterpart, Power Rangers, along with Godzilla and the Metal Hero Series. A recent surge has shown recognition of the popularity, including Crunchyroll simulcasting FUUTO PI and Amazon enabling fans to enjoy the gritty Rider movie, Shin Kamen Rider. However, bigger plans are currently in motion as Toei revealed a global distribution plan that will debut many intellectual properties into circulation outside of Japan.

‘Tokusatsu’ Officially Recognised by the English Speaking World

The Oxford English Dictionary has included ‘tokusatsu’ as an official entry, setting a definition for the Japanese genre in the English language. This occasion also perfectly aligns with the global distribution plan to bring many IPs to regions such as the US and Europe. The word was entered alongside other globally used Japanese nouns as part of the March 2024 wave of entries. This also included the anime genre ‘Isekai’, which has already gained a significant presence around the world.

“A genre of Japanese film or television entertainment characterized by the use of practical special effects, usually featuring giant monsters, transforming robots, and masked and costumed superheroes.”

Oxford English Dictionary Official Definition of ‘Tokusatsu’

For ‘tokusatsu’ to be entered alongside ‘Isekai’, shows just how big the genre has become outside of Japan. Many fans are still pushing to find ways to enjoy the latest releases, including Kamen Rider Gotchard and Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger. This official recognition provides a significant highlight to Toei as it suggests just how prime the global distribution plan will be.

Power Rangers has helped create the perfect ground for tokusatsu but franchises like Kamen Rider and Ultraman are long overdue to be given their footing. There are so many fantastic series and even fantastic ways to catch up, such as the physical releases from Shout! Factory. However, with Super Sentai celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, Toei may need to rethink the speed at which they finally unleash their content.
