Here we are, at the end of a long and amazing story, left with a lot of answers and a lot of questions, as well as a lot of potential for a season two and a cameo by a certain giant ape.
Let’s recap to start. Where were our protagonists after last week’s shocking revelations? Cate, Corah, and Shaw were trapped in the Hollow Earth, Cate found out Keiko was still alive, Kentaro finally caught up to Hiroshi, and Monarch received a weird signal hidden inside gamma radiation. This episode, named “Beyond Logic”, picks up right where episode 9 left off, while sticking to 2015.

The Present
The episode kicks off with Cate realizing the woman that saved her from the boar Titan was none other than Keiko Randa, who was previously believed to have died back in 1952. Keiko understandably has questions about Billy and Shaw. As for her, it’s only been about 57 days since her fall into the darkness at Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, in Tokyo, Kentaro is questioning Hiroshi about his motivations and actions. Hiroshi reveals he has been trying to bait out a Titan in order to open a rift between Earth and Hollow Earth in order to prove his parents weren’t crazy. Hiroshi’s hope is that he can prevent another G-Day event if he can get humans and Titans to coexist. Kentaro agrees to help Hiroshi but first asks about why Hiroshi felt the need to have a secret family in Japan, away from his family in San Francisco. Hiroshi brushes him off, reminding Kentaro that the world is at stake.
Heading back to Hollow Earth, Keiko assumes Cate is there as part of a rescue team sent inside the Hollow Earth to find her. Lee and Keiko finally reunite and Keiko discovers that the 57 days for her have been 50 years on Earth. The reunion between Shaw and Keiko is a tearful one and he breaks the bad news that Billy passed away on Skull Island. Cate then tells Keiko that her son, Hiroshi, is alive and well and that Cate is Keiko’s granddaughter and the future of the Randa bloodline.

Back on Earth, Verdugo and Tim are back at Monarch HQ, prepping for another potential Titan emergence event. Tim has convinced himself that the group is still alive in the Hollow Earth and that their knowledge could help Monarch a lot. Verdugo shuts him down, though, saying that Monarch’s sole priority is to prevent a second Titan event, refusing to send a search party.
Keiko shows the group that she managed to rewire the gamma transmitter into a beacon in the hope Monarch could use it to save her. Happy to discover that Monarch made it to 1962, Cate reveals that Monarch is still operating in 2015 and that Hiroshi followed in Keiko and Billy’s footsteps in Titan research. Realising she hasn’t seen Hiroshi since he was a baby, she asks Cate what he’s like now. As they talk, Shaw realizes the group can use the Gamma Transmitter to attract a Titan, opening a rift and allowing the group to go home.
Hiroshi is in the process of packing his belongings from Kentaro’s house and lets Kentaro and his mum know that he is going to return to San Francisco and divorce her. Kentaro’s mum tells Hiroshi that regardless of what happened between them, Kentaro deserves to have a relationship with his dad.
Feeling down after recent events, Kentaro heads to a bar, where he runs into Tim, who informs Kentaro that Monarch was able to detect a consistent Gamma signal coming from Hollow Earth, meaning something, or someone, is trying to get their attention. Meanwhile, Shaw tells Keiko that Billy had died during an expedition to prove their theory about the Titans and Hollow Earth, leaving Keiko is disbelief at just how much time has passed, almost refusing to believe them about what the year is on Earth.

Tim and Kentaro make their way to Hiroshi’s Tokyo office, where they find Hiroshi watching Billy’s final message from the start of the season. Tim brings Hiroshi up to speed regarding the gamma signal Monarch detected, which is a strong indication that the group is likely still alive. Hiroshi initially refuses to believe them and refuses to help until Kentaro steps in and pleads for his dad’s help behind Monarch’s back. Tim also commits to help and reveals that he resigned from Monarch.

Our group trapped in Hollow Earth have been transporting the Gamma Transmitter to the site where Shaw originally got stuck in Hollow Earth back in the 1962 expedition. Surprised to find that everything at the site is still functional, Keiko reminds him it’s only been there for a couple of weeks. While the group makes the preparation to leave, Keiko reveals that she wants to stay. With Billy dead and Hiroshi all grown up, she feels like she has no reason to return to Earth. Cate objects, however, revealing to Keiko about how the Titans have taken everything from her family and how she refuses to let Keiko stay behind. Shaw’s plan proves somewhat successful but the group is attacked by the dragon Titan that Shaw and Keiko found in the Philippines in 1952. After they lose all power to the ship, Shaw jumps out the reconnect the cables before the rift can close but, just as all hope seems lost, a rather familiar roar echoes through the rift and Godzilla emerges, swiftly defeating the dragon Titan by tearing it in half and heading back to the rift to Earth. As the rift reopens, sucking up everything in the area, Shaw tries to get back to the ship but ultimately sacrifices himself so that the rest of the group can escape the Hollow Earth.

Cate, Corah, and Keiko emerge on the other side, returning to Earth, just to get greeted by Kentaro, who reveals to the group that Hiroshi was the one who figured out the math behind returning them to Earth, calculating a rough time and location for their emergence. Hiroshi is rather shocked to learn that Cate and Corah have managed to find and return his mother, Keiko, and the two embrace. Cate then introduces Keiko to Kentaro, revealing that Kentaro is her grandson. Kentaro also reveals that it is now 2017, and that not only are Kentaro, Hiroshi, and Tim working for APEX Cybernetics, but they are also at a research station that APEX has established on Skull Island just as Kong shows up.

My Thoughts
This episode was absolutely amazing. Shaw managed to redeem himself to me when he sacrificed himself so Cate, Corah, and Keiko could escape. Seeing both Godzilla and Kong was amazing but I have been left wondering why APEX has a research station there when it’s not even hinted at in the following films. Also, why are Kentaro, Hiroshi, and Tim working for APEX when Godzilla vs. Kong has made it extremely clear that APEX isn’t exactly a good company. I am in high hopes for a season 2, after season 1 has essentially ended on a cliffhanger with APEX and our group on Skull Island. My last thoughts are: Did Shaw survive his fall from the ship in Hollow Earth, and will our protagonists show up in any future Monsterverse projects?
