Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Episode 2 Review

Oh, what a difference a Titan can make! Episode 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters features a dragon like Titan that give our protagonists a run for their lives.

While episode 1 was a bit light on Titans, episode 2 definitely isn’t pulling any punches with the introduction of a new dragon-like Titan emerging from the wreck of a WW2 battleship that has somehow found it’s way to the middle of a forest.

Starting with the 2015 sections, Cate, Kentaro, and May are continuing with their pursuit of the Monarch files they discovered back in episode 1. This course of action quickly pits them against Tim, played by Joe Tippett and introduced briefly at the end of episode 1, who appears to be a Monarch agent gone rogue and who was originally alerted to our protagonists first trying to access the files. Our group decide to flee Tim and pursue the only lead they currently have, which leads them straight to Colonel Leland Lafayette Shaw III, played here by Kurt Russell. Shaw is currently in a Monarch prison disguised as a retirement home for people that know way more than Monarch believes they should. Despite this, the Colonel is happy to help our trio and is eager to leave his captivity, especially as we discover Cate and Kentaro are the grandchildren of William Randa.

The episode also shows us how our 1950s group met each other, as well as fully revealing that Billy is in fact William Randa, who would go on to explore Skull Island. We see the group on their separate hunts for the same quarry, tracking it via radioactive emissions. Said quarry is spoken to have a creature of legend as it soars across the skies of the Philippines, which leads them to the previously mentioned WW2 battleship, also revealed to be the very same ship Randa had served on in his time in the navy and which he was the only survivor of in an apparent Titan attack on the vessel. The episode ends with the new Titan’s emergence from the vessel, unfortunately proving my previous Battra theory wrong, for now.

Overall, this episode was a lot better for me than the first one as we get decent introductions to the 1950s team, at last, as well as more 2015 storyline. I am curious about this new dragon Titan and if it is possibly one of many as it is pretty small when compared to the more titular Titans like Godzilla and Kong. I am still excited to see what they bring us in episode 3, and if they will use the series to introduce us to even more Titans hidden away by Monarch. Also, what secrets is Tim determined to keep?

What did you think of episode 2? Did you enjoy the reveal of a brand new Titan? Let us know in the comments below!
