Dannielynn, the daughter of Larry Birkhead and late American model, Anna Nicole Smith, showed her awesome costume of OniSister, highlighting the reach of the franchise beyond Japan.
Birkhead shared the process and the joy of the 17 year old as she shared her favourite character from the 46th Sentai series. This unexpected and surprising joy has spread among the Super Sentai fandom as the news is shared by People Magazine online.
Avataro Sentai Donbrothers is the 46th Super Sentai series that concluded its run in February 2023. The unique Sentai series featured Don Momotaro, OniSister, SaruBrother, InuBrother and KijiBrother as they fought the Noto as their adversaries. The series featured the use of an avatar theme, heroes based on the Momotaro folklore and even featured Kaito from its predecessor, Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger. Ohsama Sentai KingOhger is currently still airing as the 47th Sentai series, with Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger featuring as the upcoming 48th Sentai for 2024.
Toku Hype for Donbrothers This Halloween
Dannielynn Birkhead requested her father create the cosplay of OniSister to use as her Halloween costume for 2023. The reveal was shared among the tokusatsu community as the daughter of Anna Nicole Smith and Larry Birkhead surprised the community with her love of the character. Birkhead shared the process and unexpected difficulty of the demand on social media, while sharing the pure joy of Dannielynn as she wears the suit for the yellow hero from Avataro Sentai Donbrothers.
Dannielynn came to me a few weeks ago and said she wanted to be “Oni Sister” for Halloween. She is a character from one of her favorite shows, Avatoro Sentai Donbrothers. I believe I brushed it off and said, “Sure, we have plenty of time for that.” Fast forward to me finding out they don’t sell the costumes in stores….
Larry Birkhead shared the process and the challenge involved with creating OniSister on Instagram. This included his attempt at making a 3D model from scratch for the first time and even Dannielynn pointing out there is a difference between Super Sentai and Power Rangers. Although the process didn’t go exactly to plan, Larry was able to create the costume in time for Dannielynn to do her ‘Avataro Change’. The costume also featured the DX DonBrothers Narikiri Set, showcasing the items collected by the Super Sentai fan.
So, I had to make it from scratch based on a 3D model. It is the first time I attempted that before, but I figure we are approaching the end of the trick-or-treat phase (or maybe not) so I told her I would try my best. Hours and hours later, I think we got a decent version of her favourite character, that she has reminded me numerous times is “not a Power Ranger!”
We ran out of time, so I had to leave some things unfinished, so I just went as a “tired Dad.” I think I nailed that costume a little better than I did hers😴 Dannielynn then went off to fill up a pillowcase of candy trick-or-treating with a friend. Glad to make her smile, but next time I will check online to make sure what she wants is available! 😆 Happy Halloween 🎃
It is always fantastic to see fans showcasing their love for Super Sentai and Kamen Rider but even better when the event lands Super Sentai in renowned magazines such as People, via their website. Despite running out of time, there is no denying that Larry Birkhead managed to create a fantastic cosplay for Dannielynn and it’s wonderful to see the fandom sharing the moment on social media. As Toei is working on a global distribution plan for all intellectual properties, this occasion proves just how far Super Sentai can reach fans around the world.
