Some changes that Power Rangers has made in the past has often been met with resistance, especially if a change is viewed as controversial. However, there are major aspects to the new series that could blow minds, from big new designs to small little details. Out of all the changes that could be made, we have listed the top 7 that could have big impact on the story and even the overall concept.
The Power Rangers Reboot has been a major discussion among the fandom since it was first revealed. The new Power Rangers has only a few known facts regarding its developmen, but the upcoming Netflix releases will feature a movie with Jonathan Entwistle and a series with showrunner, Jenny Klein. Various details previously emerged about the format for the movie but the new reboot has been designed to be a form of ‘cinematic universe’. Big changes have already occurred for the future of the Power Rangers, including production moving away from New Zealand after 20 years.

Seven Shakeups for the Power Rangers Reboot

The Power Rangers Reboot could make a lot of dramatic changes regarding the story and the characters of the new universe. As the new target audience will be young adults, there are different aspects to the original TV series that could be changed on a fundamental level. These include the timeline of events fans are used to from the original releases to small details that have always been an unusual tradition. Each one of these changes could open new doors to new storylines or enhance overall excitement but, even if controversial, here are the top 7 changes that could made a dramatic impact.
7) Introduce Out of Series Rangers Instantly

The thirty year history of Power Rangers has featured many characters over the years but the comics have highlighted a substantial difference to the TV series. Along with the Alien Rangers, the Time Force Rangers have been a significant addition to the Ranger lore that shows a timeline isn’t perfectly linear. So, whether there are Rangers from another time, or another planet, the new reboot doesn’t have to stick to one team of Rangers. It would also be a great way to create excitement for new content in the future, with the possibility of teasing a potential spinoff if successful.
6) Highlight Characters as a Ranger

The early seasons of Power Rangers featured various characters becoming different Rangers over the years. This often meant that, unlike Super Sentai, a character wasn’t necessarily linked to a single Ranger as part of the character. This could change for the reboot as having returning cast would be a dramatically big change for future releases. Although there may be some power transfers or even possible deaths in the reboot, it would be amazing for a Ranger family to never worry about their roles in the future. After all, the saying does go “Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger”, so linking a character to a Ranger identity would go a long way.
5) Evolve the Ranger Arsenal

Although the Power Morpher, communicator and weapons are all iconic, now is the perfect time to add more to the concept or even add greater gimmicks. The Power Morpher and Coins are often singled out from having a connection to other items so it would be great to see a lot more interactivity between items. This could be something simple like keeping the new Power Coin in the new Communicator, or even give the concepts a bigger lore by making the weapons look like ancient high tech weapons matching the prehistoric motif theme.
4) More Devastation, More Consequences

Power Rangers barely addressed the amount of destruction that occurred to towns or cities during attacks. Although damage can’t be helped with giant monsters and Megazords, it would be worth addressing that too much damage can cause big trouble for the team. The whole destruction and repair aspect to locations has always been skipped, since the show is oriented towards action. With the Reboot, it would be worth having bigger impacts on too much destruction and a bigger struggle trying to prevent it.
3) Not Everyone Uses the Morphin Grid

Power Rangers has been feature filled with superheroes connected to the Morphin Grid. However, it would be a richer universe if not all known or current heroes use the same source of power. This could be anything from adding or referring to other heroes in the universe or even adapting factions that have previously featured in Power Rangers, such as the Silver Guardians or even Lightspeed. It would also be great to adapt other superheroes that haven’t been seen since the 90’s such as the Beetleborgs, or even VR Troopers, once the Reboot has fully taken off. Either way, it might get old if there is a full focus on the Morphin Grid with no limits and no other source of power as an alternative.
2) No Monsters, Just Villains

The ‘Monster of the Week’ formula was fantastic for kids but the new audience will need a stronger profile for opponents to enhance the overall concept. By removing this format and only having henchman as fight fodder, a greater quality of character and drama can unfold for the series. A series tone could also be applied, with even greater exchanges between good and evil. There are ways that monsters could feature but, as they are supposed to be extraterrestrials, it would do the villains justice to have strong foundations without the ‘debut & instantly destroyed’ formula in a single episode.
1) Ranger Aren’t Colour Dress Coded

The weirdest and yet most iconic element to the Rangers is that each Ranger is always wearing their Ranger colours as a civilian. One of the biggest changes the reboot could implement is simply having characters dress in something completely different instead of sticking to one colour. Naturally, their Morpher or a specific Ranger item in view could still be their respective colour but this big move would be a huge change in presentation. Just having one character deciding not to wear their designated colour from a reason such as ‘angry about being a Ranger’ would provide so much weight to scripted drama.
These would be momentous changes to the overall concept of Power Rangers, especially as fans are used to many features. As these features have become traditional or expected, a reboot would be the perfect time to question their relevance and reliability for the future. A new audience means every element must be considered for the new universe, so it will be interesting to find out what the team behind the new production will conjure up. For now, there is a big focus on Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, but the year long silence to follow will only be bearable thanks to the Boom! Studios comics.

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury was released on September 29th, 2023, featuring the 30th and last season for the original timeline. News on the Power Rangers Reboot isn’t expected until 2024, with the first announcements predicted to debut in August 2024.
