Long buried secrets will be brought to light at last in the new trailer released by Apple TV+, showing us a side of the shadowy Monarch that we’re yet to see in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set to be the first live action television series instalment (let’s not forget Skull Island over on Netflix now) in Legendary Picture’s Monsterverse. The franchise began way back in 2014 with Godzilla. It has since continued on with Kong: Skull Island released in 2016, Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019, Godzilla vs. Kong in 2022, and Skull Island in 2023. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be the next instalment in cinemas, releasing in March 2024, after the Apple TV+ series airs in November.

The series looks like it will be focusing on two siblings who go down the rabbit hole of dark secrets surrounding Monarch as they attempt to uncover their family’s ties to shadow organisation. On their journey for answers, they meet Army Officer Lee Shaw and discover his role in events in the 1950s, as well as years later when he poses a threat to Monarch. The character will be played by father and son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell, with the latter as the younger version of Shaw.

Some fans may be wondering when the series takes place in the Monsterverse timeline. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set to occur after the disastrous battle between Godzilla and the MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) that decimated San Francisco in 2014’s Godzilla, but before 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Joining the father and son duo are Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski, with John Goodman returning as William Randa from Kong: Skull Island. Co developed and executive produced by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the first two episodes of the ten episode series will be directed by Matt Shakman. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set to emerge on the November 17th on Apple TV+, with two episodes dropping straight away. From there, it will release a new episode weekly until January 12th.

If fans are slightly confused by all the Godzilla streaming shenanigans and where it’s coming from, that’s entirely fair. Since Legendary Pictures doesn’t have its own streaming service, the Monsterverse is not at home on just one platform and, as such, is rather spread out. Netflix debuted its animated prequel series, Skull Island, this past June. Meanwhile, Toho, the Japanese production company behind the original Godzilla movies as well as Shin Godzilla, is set to release their own updated version of Godzilla called Godzilla Minus One this coming December. That’s not to be confused with the next film in the Monsterverse universe, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. So, yeah, there’s a lot of Godzilla coming from a lot of different platforms – a lot of Kaiju fun to be excited for.
