Ultraman Blazar Episode 7 Recap: “Rainbow Appears: Part 1”

The first two part episode of Ultraman Blazar, Rainbow Appears, reveals Gento Hiruma’s history and sees a kaiju, Nijikagachi, team with a man from his past.

Hey all, Sean here again, and we’re back with more Ultraman Blazar. This week, we get some background on protagonist, Gento Hiruma.

Monster of the Day

Today’s kaiju is the Iridescent Monster, Nijikagachi! A kaiju that was worshipped as a bringer of rains in ancient times, summoned in the present day by Professor Kazunori Yokomine. Disillusioned with humanity, Yokomine plans on using the kaiju to reset civilization. Nijikagachi’s powers include a rainbow beam, weather manipulation and vacuum breath.

SKaRD Team

It’s extremely hot and the SKaRD team is feeling the heat. Yasunobu is working on new weapons for Earth Garon, and Nagura mentions his family’s farm had been struggling, losing many crops to drought.

Emi sends in a picture of an upside down rainbow. Nagura mentions that they’re said to be harbingers of rain. However, this one, as well as others, have been there for a week.

Gento meets with his old teacher from the GGF Academy, Professor Kazunori Yokomine. They fish together for the first time in seven years.

Yokomine offers Gento some crocodile jerky, which Gento jokingly asks if it’s Kaiju meat and they both laugh about it. The joke got laugh out of me, too. Gento asks if Yokomine knows anything about the strange rainbows and Yokomine recounts a moment from his childhood.

The village Yokomine grew up in was suffering drought so the villagers performed a prayer ritual.

Before long, he saw an upside down rainbow.

Gento gets a call that a kaiju has been spotted near Mt. Fuji and he leaves, telling Yokomine they’ll continue fishing another time, Yokomine, now alone, comments that the day may never come.

The GGF and SKaRD are fighting Nijikagachi. The fight starts with this really beautiful aerial shot, I must say. Later, after the fight, at SKaRD Command Post, the team look into folklore from across Japan and conclude the kaiju is Nijikagachi.

Gento confronts Yokomine, who reveals that he is the one who summoned Nijikagachi, as he believes that humanity are the ones who are rampaging and ravaging the Earth, not the kaiju.

Yokomine reveals seven coloured bracelets and the mark of a serpent.

The fight in todays episode was well choreographed and really showed that Blazar was having a hard time fighting Nijikagachi.

Another shot I really liked was from the end of the fight: the trail of fire on the mountain with SKaRD overlooking it.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed this week’s episode, as I always do, because honestly, Ultraman Blazar is really knocking it out of the park and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next!
