We’re back to our regularly scheduled Ultraman Blazar recaps after last week’s clip show episode. In this episode, Alien Cannan wreaks havoc on the world’s technology!
Hi all, Sean here with another Blazar recap. I really enjoyed this episode, it has a perfect balance between action, humour and story. Also, this week, we get some Yasunobu focus!
Alien of the Day

Instead of a kaiju, this week, we see our first alien, Alien Cannan! The one we specifically meet is named, Herbie. Alongside another Alien Cannan, named Robbie, they use the Aurora Beam on Earth Garon, to use it as part of their invasion plot.
SKaRD Team

Yasunobu, SKaRD’s head mechanic, has been overworking himself with the amount of work his colleagues have been unintentionally giving him.

From Emi wanting a jammer installed on her watch…

…to Anri wanting him to revise a report.

Gento notices that Yasunobu looks quite pale, but Yasunobu brushes it off, only to trip on the stairs.

Later, Yasunobu is at a laundromat, venting to his favourite dryer, which he has named, Cururu, when Gento arrives, likely having seen what happened.

Yasunobu asks if Gento saw anything, to which Gento says no and leaves. Yasunobu vents again to Cururu, thinking that Gento now thinks he’s a weirdo.

This is when Alien Cannan, Herbie, enters. At first, it seems like they’re just here to do their laundry but, in reality, they’re here to recruit Yasunobu to help in their invasion. Yasunobu has been targeted because he is the head mechanic of Earth Garon, which they had shot with the tech/machine controlling Aurora Beam, also using it on Yasunobu’s sidearm.

Herbie uses Cururu as a portal to leave but not before making a terrible joke, I have to agree with Yasunobu, the joke was quite bad. Also, the director of Ultraman Blazar, Kiyotaka Taguchi, cameos as a man visiting the laundromat, seeing Yasunobu, who had taken off his shirt after it got hit with the Aurora Beam (which in truth, disabled his SKaRD issued handgun) and just walks away.

Seeing Earth Garon act evil reminded me, and a lot of others, of the millennium iteration of MechaGodzilla, Kiryu. As Blazar transforms, he punches Earth Garon, causing him to have a traditional Ultraman appearance pose.

Also, I love this point of view shot of Gento on the ground.

Blazar fights Earth Garon, Earth Garon seems to be making short work of Blazar.

That is until Yasunobu ‘gets through’ to Earth Garon, who returns to the side of good, saving Yasunobu from falling to his death.

Blazar then summons the Spiral Burrade, and, after twisting himself in a 360° spin, throws the Spiral Burrade, destroying the Cannan ship.

Conclusion
I really enjoyed this week’s episode, as it showed us a little more of Yasunobu, and it ends with the classic Deus Ex Machina question of “is tech and machinery really sentient?”
I’ll leave that up to you to think about…
