Boom! Studios revealed its Power Rangers 30th Anniversary line-up, including Darkest Hour, a special one-shot collection, and an upcoming new series.
Boom’s offering includes Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as it starts its 12 month long anniversary event, which starts in August. Also included is a special one shot that is comprised of five unique stories from the legendary team. Details have also appeared regarding the upcoming comic cowritten by the original Pink Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson.
Boom! Studios have blessed fans with the biggest events since the comics first started in 2016. Shattered Grid was the first event that celebrated the 25th anniversary of Power Rangers, alongside the Hyperforce TTRPG. Melissa Flores is the latest to write for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, who will lead fans into a whole new anniversary event. This includes the Hyperforce and Drakkon Ranger teams appearing in the Darkest Hour from their one shot comics, as Mistress Rita corrupts the grid with Dark Spector.
Boom! Studios Power Rangers Line Up for 30th Anniversary



New releases have been revealed for the 30th Anniversary including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Comic Special and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will officially start the Darkest Hour comic event with issue 111 as the main feature of the celebration. Both new releases will also feature Amy Jo Johnson, original Pink Ranger/Kimberly Hart, as one of the cowriters highlighted for the new comics. All the new releases were featured at San Diego Comic Con 2023 during the Boom! Studios Power Rangers panel.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Comic Special



The comic special will consist of five stories throughout the timeline, which have been created by an all star lineup of talent. The anniversary release highlights the 30 year legacy of the franchise. The stories include Ernie in Angel Grove, Alpha 5’s struggle to find purpose, a mind bending “What If?” story about Tommy’s powers in an all new alternate universe, a deeper look into Tommy’s relationship with Kat, and a dive into the Ranger Academy. This will be the second release of content for Ranger Academy before the first issue comes out in October.
The team that has been brought together for these unique stories include new blood with iconic talents from past arcs. The team consists of Ryan Parrott (Rogue Sun) and features Mat Groom (Inferno Girl Red), Amy Jo Johnson (Mighty Morphin Pink Ranger), Matt Hotson (Titans), young adult author Maria Ingrande Mora (Fragile Remedy, Ranger Academy), Mairghread Scott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), along with current Mighty Morphin Power Rangers superstar scribe Melissa Flores (Dead Lucky).


A selection of variants will also be released for the comic, with Dan Mora creating the main cover. These variants will be created by Rian Gonzales (Batgirls), Jamal Campbell (Nightwing), Bon Bernardo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Miguel Mercado (Go Go Power Rangers), and Goñi Montes (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). The new comic will consist of 40 pages of brand new material, along with an additional 24 pages of classic material for fans to enjoy.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return



The new comic, featuring cowriter Amy Jo Johnson, was recently revealed during San Diego Comic Con of 2023. This will be a limited series with writer Matt Hotson as a commemorative series for the 30th celebration. The artist has yet to be revealed but character art by Dan Mora has already been shared, including older versions of the Mighty Morphin Rangers Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, and Jason Lee Scott. Details regarding the full synopsis and release date have yet to be revealed.
Darkest Hour in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers



The big event starts this August with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #111 as Mistress Vile successfully activates the Morphin Arch for Dark Spector. The event sees an empowered Rita fight against the Mighty Morphin Rangers, while aided by an evil Green Ranger – Matt, the Death Ranger, and more powerful villains. However, the Ranger team will also be gaining new allies as the Drakkon Rangers will make their debut, as seen in previews from SDCC. A recent addition, Lord Zedd in his debut Ranger form, will aid the team to stop Rita, with the Hyperforce Rangers expected in a later issue.
There is so much content available in the comics released by Boom! Studios that will be too hot to miss. Even if you are not fully caught up, there are still many releases to enjoy, and the volume of releases makes it easier to catch up fast. There is a lot to be excited about, including the Ranger Academy as it will provide a fresh take to experience in the Power Rangers universe. It will be amazing to see what the whole team have planned, especially the future vision of the original Rangers created by Amy Jo Johnson.



Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #111 will be released on August 28, 2023, which marks the start of the Darkest Hour comic event. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Comic Special will be a one time comic consisting of five unique stories, which will be released on August 30, 2023.
Ranger Academy will feature in the comic special for the 30th Anniversary celebration, with the first issue released on October 4, 2023. The release for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return has yet to reveal the release date, but the limited series is expected in 2024.
