We recently got a teaser trailer from Legendary that revealed the name of the fifth instalment in the Godzilla journey – Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In that teaser, we are briefly shown the silhouette of a new kaiju that looks a lot like a member of Kong’s species. However, a few distinctive features separate this new kaiju from Kong aesthetically, which begs the question, what exactly is this new kaiju?
Theory 1: Is this a previous Kong that ruled Hollow Earth?
Through all of the Legendary Monsterverse films, we never once hear anyone refer to Kong as “King Kong” at all, so could this new kaiju be the actual King Kong and true ruler of Hollow Earth? Have they been in hiding since before the Monsterverse first started and, due to recent activities in Godzilla VS Kong, have finally woken up? This would go a long way in explaining the blue glow of the new kaiju’s eyes, given the original iteration of King Kong did have some electricity based powers.
Theory 2: A possible rival species to Kong
The new kaiju is seen sporting red fur as well as skinnier, leaner arms when you compare them to Kong’s bulkier build. The new kaiju does seem to closely resemble an orangutan, or maybe even a chimpanzee, more than they do a gorilla. Maybe this new kaiju is a decendant of a rival bipedal species to Kong’s own, and the two species came to blows over who should rule Hollow Earth and the power it contains. Unearthing this dormant rival would then pose a new threat to the currently established hierarchy over the Hollow Earth.
Theory 3: The new kaiju is a Godzilla/Kong Hybrid
This theory is, admittedly, a bit out there compared to the first two but it is possible that Apex, or another “evil” corporation, managed to get their hands on some of Godzilla’s and Kong’s DNA after the events of Godzilla VS Kong and found a way to make a clone by combining the two separate pieces of DNA, like how Apex Cybernetics used Ghidora’s skull as a way to pilot MechaGodzilla. If this theory somehow proves true, the writers could potentially use it to introduce the Xillian race, as well as some of the other space/alien kaiju as well, like SpaceGodzilla or Gigan.
