Shin Kamen Rider: What We Know So Far

With Shin Kamen Rider’s release date on the horizon, to say I’m excited for Hideaki Anno’s next film is a massive understatement. I thoroughly enjoyed Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman, so I’m excited to see what’s in store, but what do we know so far?

The Cast and Characters

Well, without any further delay, let’s start off with a look at the people we’re going to see on screen. The film is set to star the following actors:

Sosuke Ikematsu as Takeshi Hongo/Kamen Rider

Tasuku Emoto as Hayato Ichimonji/Kamen Rider No.2

Minami Hamabe as Ruriko Midorikawa

Nanase Nishino as Hachi Augment-01

Shinya Tsukamoto as Dr. Hiroshi Midorikawa

Toru Tezuka as Koumori Augment-01

Mirai Moriyama as Ichiro Midorikawa

I’m excited to see what they bring to the table. Based on the teasers and final trailer, they’re all going to do amazingly in this movie, despite the lack of lines in the trailers.

“Those which change. Those which never change. And those that don’t want to change.”

The Crew

Once again, Hideaki Anno will be writing and producing but, like Shin Godzilla, he will also be directing. He sat out of directing Shin Ultraman, which was directed by Shinji Higuchi, as he was working on this movie. By the look of things, Shinji Higuchi won’t be involved with this film.

The Music

Based on previous instalments of the Shin series, it is highly likely that Shin Kamen Rider will reuse various pieces of Showa era Kamen Rider music. The movies main theme song has not been revealed, only this piano based tune has been played during all teasers, which leads me to assume this will be part of the main theme song.

The Locations

Hideaki Anno, the madman that he is, is filming several scenes for this movie at the original 1971 filming locations, as shown in the pictures below:

1971

2023

As you can see, different camera placement aside, it is the exact same place.

Now, moving right along to the last part of today’s piece:

The Synopsis

According to the Kamen Rider Wiki, the following is the synopsis for the film:

“College student and motorcycle enthusiast Takeshi Hongo is abducted by the evil organization Sustainable Happiness Organization with Computational Knowledge Embedded Remodeling, otherwise known as “Shocker”, and converted into Batta Augment-01 as part of their plans for world domination. Before they can brainwash him to do their bidding, he escapes and uses his new enhanced abilities, renaming himself Kamen Rider, to wage a one man war against Shocker.”

Like with Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman before it, Hideaki Anno is set to bring a classic series into the modern day, and I really hope this movie turns out well, as it is set to receive an international release, as confirmed by Shinichirô Shirakura himself.

The movies toyline is also starting to slowly release, with Legend Henshin Belts having released alongside the first batch of vinyl figures, with DX Henshin Belts, a model kit of Kamen Rider and an S.H. Figuarts on the way later in the year.

But what do you think? Will you be watching Shin Kamen Rider? let us know more in the comments, and the next time you read something from me, it’ll be back to Shin Ultraman to talk about the toys.
