S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider Geats Magnum Boost Form Review

It’s a great time to be a Rider fan. The Reiwa Era has gotten off to a great start with three awesome series and some equally amazing toylines. Among these toy lines, of course, we have the S.H. Figuarts line, which over the years has had its ups and downs with their quality control etc but we aren’t here to talk about the past, we’re here to discuss the future, so GET READY FOR MAGNUM and BOOST!

This is the latest in a long line of S.H. Figuarts: Kamen Rider Geats Magnum Boost Form. The figure has now been officially released on The Toku Source and I am here to give you the lowdown on this figure. We will look at the pros and cons, the good and the bad, and in the end you can decide if you desire this figure.

Release / Price

The Japanese first release of the Kamen Rider Geats Magnum Boost Form officially released for purchase in Japan during February 2023. It has a UK price point of £65, which I know can be a little offputting as there have definitely been “cheaper “ first releases of |Rider Figuarts in the past. Before you go ahead and drop some £££ on this figure, let me do the work for you and help you truly decide if he’s worth the price or not.

Packaging

The packaging looks great and keeps everything safe and sound. The box is the newer style of Figuarts packaging which we have seen since since the Kamen Rider Build line in 2017/18. The box is made up in a white/black/red colour scheme to match with the main man himself and additionally features the Geats emblem, which is found on his I.D. Core. As well as an awesome image of the Geats suit from the show, there a large seethrough window, meaning you could easily leave you’re figure inside if you wanted to leave it sealed (but there’s no fun in that, in my opinion). Of course, we also have the Tamashii Nations quality sticker which is always a plus.

The sides of the box feature some additional images such as the DGP (Desire Grand Prix) logo but most of the detail lies in the back of the box. Here you will get images of just some of the many poses you will be able to achieve with the figure, in addition to a sneak peak at the next figure in the Geats SHF line, Kamen Rider Buffa.

Once the outer box is opened, you will find the figure and all its accessories are contained in a pretty standard plastic tray. One small piece of advice I would give you is to be extra carful when you remove the top piece of plastic tray as the accessories have a tendency to go flying and you wouldn’t want to lose a hand or weapon etc; that would really suck.

Articulation

Just like most Figuarts, this one features the head on a ball joint and since there’s nothing really blocking it it’s able to do a 360 degree turn. The arms are able to rotate fully, also; the shoulder pads have your typical Figuarts connection and are removable, which comes into play later.

Whilst the elbow is, in fact, double jointed, it doesn’t add more than a single joint would due to the armour on the forearm. The wrists are on a ball joint so lots of movement there. Additionally, the hips and knees have more than enough articulation capabilities due to the double joint in the knee, which makes for excellent posing options.

One issue that has been making the rounds with this figure is the bicep. The design of the base suit means that there are grooves and strap-like pieces which are built into the suit, however there have been reports from the fandom that this piece is fragile and is at risk of breaking if the bicep is posed too roughly, so this is something to keep in mind when posing your Geats.

Sculpting/Paint

Now we all know Ace is a good looking guy but what about his armour? Well, I can tell you that photos alone don’t do this figure justice, so let’s start from head and work out way downwards.

The head/helmet piece features all the details of the one used in the show – from the fox ears to the orange eye lenses – and a lot of detail in such a small space really makes the helmet stand out.

The magnum armour on the front of torso is done up in a very nice pearlescent white/grey colour which makes the figure pop against the black base suit. One small issue with this is that tokusatsu toys done in similar colours on past lines have a tendency to yellow over time when exposed to light; this may not be the case with the Geats line but it’s still something so bear that in mind when displaying the figure.

The back half features a plastic scarf which at first glance looks like actual cloth. However, the moulded folds of the material just add a more realistic look. A small detail but it just makes this figure look that bit more amazing.

In the middle of the figure, as if tying the two halves together, we have the Desire Driver. Just like in the show, as well as with the DX toy, the buckles can be removed. I find this quite a scary thought as, I don’t know about you but, I live in constant fear of losing figure accessories, especially small ones such as these. They do seem to stay in place when inserted into the driver, though, which, in all honesty, was a big relief to me.

Moving down to the legs and the boost half of the figure, the armour is done in a really nice matte red colour with the boost exhaust pieces on the shin/calf being done up in a metallic rainbow which really stands out against the red of the armour.

Gimmick

This seasons gimmick is of course the Raise Buckles and, in addition, the ability to “revolve” or change their armour around. When I first saw this, I was nervous as to how the figure would work but again my fears were all for nothing. Going back to the driver, the buckles are completely removable and they can be stored on the belt clips (as can the Magnum Shooter), however, since Geats is the only figure of the line that’s currently available, you have no real need to remove the buckles. In addition to the driver and the belt clips, the buckles can also be inserted into the Magnum Shooter if you so desire. The shooter unfortunately can’t extend to the rifle mode, though, as this will come with the Geats Entry Form figure. Overall, this has very good functionality and it’s nice not to have to have multiple versions of essentially the same item.

How about doing the revolve change?

Wait, did you say revolve change? Can this figure even do that? Well, the short answer is yes. The Desire Driver is able to spin (just like in the show) allowing the figure to swap around their armour . However, since you can’t really use this feature yet without another rider to swap armours with, I’ve decided to skip this from the review. I will keep it in mind for the future.

Speaking of armour, just like in the show, the Geats armour has small blaster pieces built into the gauntlets, which – wouldn’t you know it – are actually a feature of this figure! The blasters are a little fiddly to pop out of the gauntlets but are totally worth your time and effort. In addition, the exhaust pipes on the shin are able to move, which only adds to the poseability of the figure.

Accessories

This particular figure comes with:

  • The Geats Magnum Boost figure itself,
  • Magnum Shooter,
  • 6 hands,
  • 2 fists,
  • Boost Buckle,
  • Magnum Buckle.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this figure is really cool. The overall design is gorgeous and the paint job is stunning. Other than missing the rifle for the Magnum Shooter and a small potential for arm breakage (which can be easily avoided), the figures high level of functionality and potential for many armour combinations in the future more than make up for its minuscule shortcomings.

Should you buy this figure ? As with anything, that answer depends entirely on you. If you like Geats as a standalone Rider, the figure is the perfect representation of the character to have on display. If like me you are eager to get more of the Geats Rider figures for the armour swapping gimmick then this one is a must.

And with all that being said, only one question remains…
