The newest Super Sentai, Ohsama Sentai KingOhger, uses new technology, called LED walls, for the filming of the fictional countries that form the KingOhger’s version of earth.
What are LED walls?
LED wall technology is a type of display technology that utilise light emitting diodes (LEDs) to create large, high resolution video walls. LED walls are commonly used in a wide range of applications, including advertising, events, concerts, sports venues, and corporate settings. LED walls offer several advantages over traditional display technologies such as LCDs, including higher brightness, wider viewing angles, and better contrast ratios. They also offer the ability to create seamless video walls with no visible bezels, making them ideal for large-scale installations.
LED walls are available in a variety of configurations, ranging from small indoor displays to large outdoor displays that can be seen from great distances. They are also available in a range of pixel pitches, with smaller pitches resulting in higher resolution displays. LED walls can be either front serviceable or rear serviceable, depending on the application. Front serviceable walls are typically used for indoor applications and allow for easy maintenance and replacement of individual LED modules. Rear serviceable walls are typically used for outdoor applications and allow for easy access to the electronics and power supplies.
In recent years, the use of LED walls has become increasingly common in film production. Here are some examples of films that have used LED wallss:
- The Mandalorian (2019-2020): The popular Disney+ series made headlines for its use of cutting edge LED screens in place of traditional green screens, allowing for a more immersive filming experience and realistic backgrounds.
- Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018): Another Star Wars film, Solo, used LED screens extensively to create realistic environments and backgrounds.
- Black Panther (2018): The Marvel blockbuster made use of LED screens to create some of its more fantastical environments, including the vibrant and futuristic city of Wakanda.
- Blade Runner 2049 (2017): This sci-fi sequel used LED screens to create the film’s stunning futuristic landscapes, including a memorable scene set in a neon lit city.
- Gravity (2013): While not using LED screens specifically, this space epic made use of advanced projection technology to create its stunning visuals, which included projections onto a massive, curved screen to simulate the feeling of zero gravity.
These are just a few examples of the many films that have used LED screens in recent years to enhance their visuals and create more immersive environments.
The ones that Toei are using in the production are from Sony.

How does this make this different from other Sentai?
LED screens and green screens are two different technologies used for different purposes in television and film production. As mentioned above; LED screens are electronic display devices that use light emitting diodes (LEDs) to produce images. LED screens can display high quality, high resolution images and videos which makes it a good choice if you want to create a fictional country. LED screens are used as the actual backdrop or display screen for the actors to perform in front of, rather than being replaced in post production. This feature transports the actors to a whole new world which brings a sense of them actually being in their respective kingdoms!
On the other hand, green screens are used as a backdrop during filming to allow for the replacement of the background in post production using chroma keying. The green screen is typically a large green backdrop that is evenly lit to ensure a consistent colour, and actors perform in front of it. In post production, the green colour is removed and replaced with a different image or video footage, creating the illusion of the actors being in a different location or environment.
In the DonBrothers opening, the utilisation of LED screens are also used to create watercolour backdrops – noticeably, when the actors are dancing! So, it is great to see Toei kick it up a notch with that and bring a whole new world on set with KingOhger!
